Welcome to Llanes Kona Coffee Estates!

We sell 100% Kona Coffee and Hawaiian Coffee. This is a 3rd generation family tradition. We make everything in house from growing our single-estate coffee, picking only the red- ripe cherries, pulping it, dry milling and hand-roasted to perfection.

Why is Kona Coffee so special?
The high elevation, rich volcanic soil, sunny mornings, clouds and rain in the afternoon, and perfect temperature throughout the year, makes Kona the ideal place to grow coffee.
Kona Coffee was praised by Mark Twain in 1866 when he declared that Kona Coffee had a much richer flavor than any other coffee.

Did you know?
  • Kona coffee is the only coffee grown in the United States.
  • It is well known around the world for its rich flavor and excellent quality. In fact, Mark Twain said, “Kona coffee has a richer flavor than any other…”
  • Samual Ruggles brought the first coffee plant to Kona in 1828.
  • Native Hawaiians and Chinese laborers worked the fields where everything was done by hand. When the market crashed the plantation owners leased the land to its workers, many of which were from Japan who were brought in to work on the sugar plantations.
  • The work was difficult, but the rich volcanic soil and perfect climate provided the perfect condition for growing coffee.
  • Several areas were used for coffee fields throughout the Big Island, but the district of Kona was perfect and now the majority of coffee is planted here.
  • Kona coffee blooms with small white flowers (Kona Snow) covering the tree in February and March.
  • Because it is so rare some retailers sell Kona Blends which may only contain 10% of Kona coffee and 90% of cheaper imported beans.
  • In 1990 a California company was sued on behalf of Kona coffee growers for labeling bags “Kona coffee” but filling it with Central American coffee. If you want to experience the rich full flavor that Mark Twain talked about then order 100% Kona coffee from us and  we will ship directly to your door.

Peaberry Green Kona Coffee

What is peaberry? It’s a natural mutation of the coffee seed inside the coffee fruit. What we drink comes from the coffee fruit seed. Normally one fruit contains two seeds, similar to two parts of a peanut, with the flat sides abutting. But in about 5% of the fruit, which is true for our farm, the fruit contains just one whole, round seed, which is denser than the normal coffee seeds.
